Winter Dog Care
Does your dog like the cold? Or does Fido give you that reproachful look when you go to take him out on a frigid day? Regardless of your furry friend’s opinion on things like snow and ice, he’ll benefit from some extra TLC at this time of year. Here, a Valley Center, KS vet discusses caring for your dog in winter.
Paws
Don’t forget that your canine buddy is running around barefoot! As you can imagine, running around on snow and ice without shoes on isn’t much fun. Snow, salt, sand, ice, and chemical de-icing agents can all do a number on Fido’s feet. Use paw balm or wax to protect those delicate paw pads.
Walks
Always wear boots or shoes with good treads when walking Fido. You don’t want to slip and fall if your pup pulls on the leash! Pay attention to the terrain, as the snow can mask things like broken glass.
Food
Some pooches need to eat bigger portions when it’s cold out, as they burn extra calories just staying warm. This isn’t an across the board recommendation, however. Ask your vet for specific advice.
Weather
Brushing your dog regularly will get rid of that dead fur and dander, which will in turn help increase the insulating properties of his coat. If your four-legged pal has a thin coat, get him a comfy doggy sweater.
Exercise
Don’t let Fido become a complete couch potato! Keep your pooch active indoors by playing with him.
Arthritis
Does your canine companion suffer from arthritis, hip dysplasia, or other bone/joint conditions? He may benefit from taking certain supplements, such as fish oil. Ask your vet for recommendations.
Darkness
It gets dark early at this time of year. If you leave Fido home alone, keep a light on for him. It’s also a good idea to wear reflective clothing, especially at night, and bring a flashlight with you.
Bedding
Your canine pal may very well sleep through many of those dreary winter days, and who can blame him? Make sure he has a warm, comfy bed to snuggle up in! If Fido is a senior dog and/or has thin fur, he may appreciate a thermal blanket or even a heated bed.
