Giving Your Dog Treats
Does your canine pal enjoy treats? If not, you may want to make Fido an appointment, as that is definitely unusual for dogs! Giving your pup snacks isn’t exactly rocket science, but there are some things to consider. A Wichita, KS vet lists some of them below.
Limit People Food
Some of the things we eat are safe and suitable for dogs. In fact, some of our favorites are actually good for Fido! Plain, cooked meat, fish, or poultry are at the top of the list here. Just be sure to remove the skin, bones, and fat. Also, avoid giving your pooch processed meats.
Don’t Go Overboard
We know, it feels good to pamper your beloved pet. However, you aren’t doing Fido any favors by overindulging him. Keep treats to about five percent of your furry pal’s daily caloric intake.
Avoid Unsafe Foods
While some of our foods just aren’t great for dogs, others are downright dangerous. This list includes chocolate; alcohol; grapes, currants, and raisins; avocados; caffeine; garlic, onion, scallions, and chives; nuts; mushrooms; and pitted fruits. Meat on the bone is also unsafe, as bone can break off into deadly shards when chewed.
Check Labels
Get into the habit of reading pet food labels. Choose ones with ingredients you can identify. Stay away from anything with a long list of unidentifiable ingredients. If it looks like a chemistry experiment, that’s likely exactly what it is!
Have Fido Work
Have your furry friend do a trick for his treat. This is a great way to reinforce his training. Plus, dogs really do try to please their humans. Fido is adorable when he knows he’s been a good boy!
Consult Your Vet
Your veterinarian indirectly plays a lot of roles in Fido’s life: doctor, dentist, personal trainer, teacher, and sometimes dietician. Ask your vet for specific tips on the type and amounts of treats your canine companion should have.
Time It Right
Dog treats are more than just snacks: they’re a way of communication with your canine buddy, and rewarding him for good behavior. Keep this in mind when giving your pooch treats. If you give Fido a cookie for getting off the couch, you aren’t giving him a consolation prize: you’re rewarding him for bad behavior!
