Reasons to Hug Your Cat
June 1, 2021

Is your feline pal a cuddlebug? If so, you may want to make a note on your calendar: June 4th is Hug Your Cat Day! Cats deserve to be hugged every day, but they will definitely appreciate some extra cuddles. A Valley Center, KS veterinarian lists some key reasons why in this article.

Bonding

Hugging is a great way to spend time with Fluffy, and make her feel loved. Studies have shown that cats actually see their humans as their parents. (Clearly, they also see us as their servants, but that’s another topic.) Snuggling is particularly important with kittens, as it helps with socialization.

Stress Relief

Hugging a cat is extremely soothing, and can be a great comfort on bad days. In fact, cuddling Fluffy is very beneficial for anyone who is battling stress, grief, depression, anxiety, or PTSD. This is why kitties are now often found ‘working’ in places like nursing homes and hospices.

Healing Vibes

Kitty hugs are also good for you physically. Snuggling with your feline pal has been shown to reduce your risk of stroke and heart attack. It can even lower your blood pressure. That’s not all, though. As it turns out, Fluffy purrs at frequencies that have been shown to help promote healing and bone growth. These same therapies are actually used in physical rehabilitation!

Sleep Aid

Do you have trouble sleeping? Are you constantly dealing with stress and anxiety? Some snuggle time with your furry friend may be just what you need to help you relax. Fluffy is a great napping buddy!

Benefits For Kids

If you have little ones, they will also benefit from hugging cats. Fluffy can be a great comfort to youngsters. She’s also a purrfect snuggle buddy, and can teach children about the importance of being kind and empathic to our animal friends. Plus, what could be cuter than seeing a kitty cuddling with their favorite tiny human? Just monitor interactions between young children and cats carefully.

Tips

There are a few things to keep in mind when hugging cats. First and foremost: never hug a kitty that doesn’t want to be hugged. Forcing attention on Fluffy is a huge faux paw . It’s also a great way to get scratched!
